First-year growth response of trees in an intact forest

چکیده

Although elevated atmospheric CO2 has been shown to increase growth of tree seedlings and saplings, the response of intact forest ecosystems and established trees is unclear. We report results from the ®rst large-scale experimental system designed to study the effects of elevated CO2 on an intact forest with the full complement of species interactions and environmental stresses. During the ®rst year of exposure to a 1.5 ¥ ambient CO2, canopy loblolly pine (Pinus taeda, L.) trees increased basal area growth rate by 24% but understorey trees of loblolly pine, sweetgum (Liquidambar styraci ̄ua L.), and red maple (Acer rubrum L.) did not respond. Winged elm (Ulmus alata Michx.) had a marginally signi®cant increase in growth rate (P = 0.069). These data suggest that this ecosystem has the capacity to respond immediately to a step increase in atmospheric CO2; however, as exposure time increases, nutrient limitations may reduce this initial growth stimulation.

Composition and structure of a Fagus orientalis-dominated forest managed with shelterwood aim (A Case study in the Caspian forests, northern Iran)

Composition and structure of a three-storied Fagus orientalis-dominated forest was investigated in the Caspian forests, north of Iran. Circular sampling plots of 1000 m2 occupied by advance growth and natural regeneration were randomly chosen where the initial cuttings (with shelterwood aim) were performed. Abundance of species at different growth stages and quality of seedlings and saplings we...

Comparison of Ordinal Response Modeling Methods like Decision Trees, Ordinal Forest and L1 Penalized Continuation Ratio Regression in High Dimensional Data

Background: Response variables in most medical and health-related research have an ordinal nature. Conventional modeling methods assume predictor variables to be independent, and consider a large number of samples (n) compared to the number of covariates (p). Therefore, it is not possible to use conventional models for high dimensional genetic data in which p > n. The present study compared th...

تعیین رویش حجمی جنگل با استفاده از قطعات نمونه دائم (مطالعه موردی: جنگل فریم، بخش جوجاده)

Iran's northern forests, which are mainly located on the northern slopes of Alborz Mountains, are important due to their excellent features. Accordingly, studying the dynamic of forest communities and their growth status can help planners and executive managers. One of the basic information for the management and sustainable use of forests is forest stand volume (volume and number). In fact, th...

Investigation some of the Biotic and Abiotic Variables Effective on the Diameter Increment of the Beech Trees at Fixed Sample Plots level by Growth Models

Quantifying forest growth and determination of its affective factors are fundamental for forest management. This study examines the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the diameter increment of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) in a high-elevation forest in northern Iran using permanent sample plots. The aim of this study was identification and quantifying environmental factors such...

Dynamics and Structural characteristics of a natural unlogged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand during a 5-years period in Shast Kalate Forest, Northern Iran

Investigation on structure and dynamics of natural forest ecosystems is an important issue for silvicultural decisions. The aim of this study is to analysis dynamics and structure of a beech stand during 5-year period in the Shast Kalateh forest in the Caspian region, North of Iran. Data were collected from a 16.9ha permanent research plot established in a natural unlogged stand in 2006. All li...
